Mount Zuquala & Abbo Monastery
ዝቋላ ገዳም
The forested cone of Zuquala rises dramatically from the plain south of Bishoftu, holding a shallow crater lake considered holy by both Orthodox Christians and Oromo tradition. The Zuquala Abbo (Gebre Menfes Kidus) monastery on the rim draws huge pilgrimages twice a year, and the rim walk offers grand views.
☀️ Local tip
The summit road is rough — 4x4 recommended, or hike the final stretch. Respect monastery rules: the lake is sacred, so no swimming.
