The town of Bishoftu sits among a cluster of volcanic crater lakes — Hora, Babogaya, Bishoftu, Kuriftu and seasonal Chelekleka — each ringed by walking paths, birdlife and resorts. Lake Hora also hosts the great Irreecha thanksgiving of the Oromo people each year.

An easy escape by expressway (~1 hour). Walk the Lake Hora rim for pelicans and kingfishers, then lunch at a lakeside resort; weekends get busy with Addis crowds.
