Minalesh Tera (Merkato Recycling Lanes)

In these narrow alleys of tin-shack workshops on the edge of Merkato, Addis's 'korale' collectors sell everything reclaimable — and artisans hammer jerrycans, tyres and scrap metal into stoves, buckets, sandals and tools. Named for the traders' cry 'minalesh?' ('what do you have?'), it's one of Africa's great informal recycling economies in full swing.
